Me and my friends

I have been thinking recently about the importance that friends and family play in our lives!! Now the world is a smaller place, in terms of travel and the opportunities we have to explore other countries and meet incredible people from near and far, means that nearly all of us have people we miss daily!! Once someone special comes into your life, whenever and wherever that may be, they touch your heart and you know that a friendship has started. True friends are a joy to have in your life, but like anything require love and attention!!

I’m missing my special people right now that live back home in England and I know we always have memories but sometimes you just need a hug, a coffee, a chat or just to see the smile on that other persons face! My mum has just completely shocked me and booked a flight over to see me in Australia and it will be nearly 10 months since we last saw each other! I just cant wait and it has just re-affirmed to me how sometimes our important people just know when we need them and we all have the potential to surprise people and make them SMILE!! We are all so lucky now, we have so many which ways to keep special people in our lives, whether that be Skype, Text Message, Email, Facebook, Blogging, Phone Call, Tweeting, Letter (one of my old time faves)……so all in all there really is never any excuse to every so often tell someone special just how much they mean to you, that you are there for them and thinking of them, even if you cant see them….!

Yoga is a way of living, not just a physical or spiritual practice, send some of that wonderful energy, love, light and life that shines from within us out into the world to you and your friends…..

This is for one of my specials…… (I hope it makes her smile!)

Yoga Aid

The Yoga Aid Challenge takes place again this year on the weekend of 12th/13th November 2011 across Australia, and the rest of the world at some point during 2011, in its 5th year there ethos “they want to make as large a difference as possible through the love of yoga”. Sounds PRETTY AWESOME TO ME!!

I am lucky enough to be involved in helping to run the challenge of a 2 hour yoga class, consisting of 108 Sun Salutations here in Darwin, with a wonderful Yogi I have met along my yoga journey and a few more on the day.

Take a look at the Yoga Aid website to read about all the wonderful yogis making a difference around the world and also sponsor me if you cant get to Darwin to partake in a few Downward Dogs yourself!!

First Yoga Class I Ever Taught

First 20 Minute class plan!

Mindbodygreen website recently did an article asking all-star yogis to recollect their first time yoga teaching experiences, so I thought wow i’m currently on my 79th class taught (cant believe it!!) so had a look back in my teaching notebook, that I still use to scribble down new flows and poses I want to remember to try in my classes, the teaching plans don’t look anything like they did at the beginning, I seem to rely on my creativity so much more now and have really started to find my flow AND IT FEELS WONDERFUL!! (which I cant believe, it felt like it would never happen at the beginning!!)

The picture above is of my class notes for my first ever 20 minute section of class taught at the Byron Yoga Centre in my teacher Training, taught with 4 other teacher trainees, each having a section of the 4-part structure to a yoga class, warm-up, middle 1, middle 2 and cool-down!! I just remember not breathing or feeling like I was even in the same room as my students. I had a strange part of the class, as it was the wall supported asana’s that I had to teach, which really changed the dynamic of the class and flow and was very much verbal instruction. The class size was big, even for a 6am morning class and getting 12 people up against a wall in Adho Mukha Vrksasana (upside down tree, supported by the wall!!) was no mean task! Apparently the word I used the most in my instruction, was ‘taking care’, which cant be a bad thing. It all passed in a blur and took a few more for that feeling to pass. Breathing I have found to be the key, I still sometimes lose my breath, particularly teaching Vinyasa flow and being a complete ‘chatterbox’, I know I offer to many words to my students. The most important lesson I learnt back in that class was, ‘self belief’, I got through it and as soon as I finished knew that I was on to something incredible and just had to hope that my passion shone through!

laulovesyoga on YouTube!!

I have uploaded some new videos on my YouTube channel, just playing around, its a little strange seeing yourself. Yoga is such an internal practise, even when teaching I sometimes forget that people are watching my body move through the asana flow, so to see the physical shapes that you make by watching it back on video is a little strange……see the videos at laulovesyoga YouTube!

What colour is your yoga mat?

What does your yoga mat colour say about you??….

RED - You are energetic, vibrant, and passionate. You feel things intensely. Like a red Ferrari, you stand out from the crowd…and someone is always chasing you. You like to chase back; your Niyama (sanskrit for a set of codified behaviours that make up the limbs of yoga) is Tapas — Heat/Cleansing. Poses: Utkatasana (Chair Pose),Virabhadrasana 2 (Warrior 2), and Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations). Chakra: Root - Survival + Grounding.

ORANGE - Orange mat people are balanced, warm, and enthusiastic. They have brought along Aztec Sweet Chili Yogi Tea to class to share with everyone. A little (or maybe a lot) flamboyant, they have lots of friends. Their Yama is Asteya — Non-Stealing; Oranges have plenty to share and love to do so. Poses: Cat/Cow with Lion’s Breath, Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward Bow/Wheel), and Pincha Mayurasana (Peacock). Chakra: Sacral - Relationships + Sexuality.

YELLOW - You are joyous, happy, and hopeful. When you walk into the room, it is filled with sunshine and lightness. Yellow people inspire and instill optimism in others. Your Niyama is Santosha — Contentment. Poses: Happy Baby, Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana (Extended Hand-to-Big-Toe), andTrikonasana (Triangle). Chakra: Solar Plexus - Personal Power + Growth.

GREEN - Green mat yogi/nis are natural, youthful, and intelligent. They love to learn, draw money and prosperity to them with ease, and are often healers of some sort. Greens are the people you want to know; they have an aura of ethereality and quirk. Their (traditional) Niyama is Mati — Spiritual Will + Intellect. Poses are Vrksasana (Tree), Prasarita Padottanasana (Wide-Legged Forward Bend), andCamatkarasana (Wild Thing). Chakra: Heart - Unconditional Love for the Self and Others.

BLUE - You are tranquil, calm, and steady. You cannot tell a lie. Satya is your m.o. What you aren’t is loud, flashy, or inappropriate. Blues are welcome anywhere; they flow like water, making their way purposefully, but elegantly. Your (traditional) Yama is Kshama — Patience + Presence. Poses:Tadasana (Mountain Pose), Salamba Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand), and Sukhasana (Easy Pose). Chakra: Throat - Communication.

PURPLE - People with purple mats are sophisticated, mysterious, and wise. They embody the grace of royalty. Purples are often creative, artistic, and spiritual. Their color is the hue of meditation. The Niyama for Purples is Svadhyaya— Self-Study. Poses: Natarajasana (Lord of the Dance/King Dancer), Eka Pada Koundinyasana 2, and Padmasana (Lotus). Chakra: Third Eye/Brow - Intuition, Clarity, + Consciousness.

PINK - Pink mat practitioners are sweet, romantic, and idealistic. They are closely in touch with and celebrate their inner child. These are caring, tender people who want to love and be loved. They like bubblegum, rollerskates, and Pepto Bismol (haha). The (traditional) Yama for Pinks is Daya — Compassion. Poses: Hanumanasana (Monkey), Purvottanasana (Upward Plank), and Balasana (Child’s).

WHITE - You are pure, peaceful, and innocent. Soft, quiet, and gentle like winter snow. Your Niyama is Sauca — Cleanliness. White has the presence of all colors and represents the energy of light. You have the ability to cleanse others and make them feel balanced and at ease. Poses: Sirsasana (Headstand), Marichyasana 1, and Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-the-Wall). Chakra: Crown - Pure Consciousness.

BLACK - Black mat yogi/nis are powerful, effortlessly stylish, and deep. Where white is all colors, black is the absence of light, no color. Your Yama is Aparigraha — Non-Attachment. As black is indicative of the unseen, these yogi/nis have faith, solid as black soil. They are at peace with what may come. They are resilient. Poses: Virasana (Hero), Virabhadrasana 3 (Warrior 3), and Bhujangasana (Cobra).

GRAY - You are subtle, sleek, and dignified. Gray is the color of winter skies and the water along rugged coastlines. You value security, conservatism, and independence. Perhaps you are a lone wolf, happily at peace in solitude, but able to enjoy the company of others on occasion. Your Yama is Brahmacharya — Moderation. Poses: Paschimottanasana (Forward Bend), Dolphin, and Garudasana (Eagle).

BROWN - Brown mat practitioners are earthy, stable, and comfortable in their mind, body, and spirit. They are masters of home and hearth, often good cooks and hosts/hostesses. Browns are unflappable; steady, strong, and genuine. The Yama for Browns is Ahimsa — No Harm. Poses: Tadasana (Mountain), Malasana (Garland), and Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog).

Yoga Teacher Thought of the Day

“Rome was not built in a day,” and a great teacher is not formed over night.

Yoga is a personal journey of love, learning and striving to be a better person every day in every little way, if yoga teachers can pass a little bit of this message of self love on to their students then that makes the first steps on the road to a great teacher!!

Are you good enough?

So I have been having thoughts recently, now that I am living and breathing as a real life yoga teacher, that how do you ever feel good enough or know that what you are doing is making a difference!

I know this is a constant bug bear that we all have somewhere deep inside of us, but I keep thinking about how you combat this when you are teaching someone something! Students, clients look to you as an inspiring force in their life and so the very nature of this can therefore feel like the president is set high and is wildly unachievable!

A lovely yogini once said to me “you never know what someone has been through when they arrive in front of you on their mat, so don’t be offended by any kind of reaction to your class or words” and surely this has to be true of a yoga teacher too, or infact anyone you come in to contact with in your Daily life! The difference being that as your yoga instructor, we are there to facilitate your practise and use our experience to adapt our words and class to what presents us at that very moment. I hope that this is something that being a teacher of something wonderful like yoga, that works to unify your mind, thoughts, body and breath, is something that regardless of my mood or emotional state when I enter my own class is still achievable. And because of all of this I have been beating myself up about not feeling I am being truly truthful with myself as a yogini.

This sounds like its heading to be a negative post, but I just had to have a bit of a structured think as to why my thoughts occasionally turn into negative ones!!

I see being a yoga teacher/instructor/guru as being able to give your class as a precious gift to your students, to allow them to work with their own bodies and mind and all learn, flow and practise together as one; sharing. When students come to me at the end of a class, to say they struggle with this, or this pose is not getting any easier, or they struggle to practise consistently each week, I want them to know that that is the very same for me and all of us. Nobody is perfect and I think this is the key point in this whole blurb and how boring would it be if we were!!

All too often do I not listen to my own advice (and I know I’m not the only one), it’s very easy to give it out but difficult to take!! The practise of one of the sutras/limbs that make up the holistic approach to yoga that Ashtanga speaks of, the practise of Ahimsa, non violence toward yourself! We need to push ourselves to keep a healthy mind and body and yoga facilitates this in the most fabulous way possible but realising that its ok to have off days, negative moments; it’s a natural part of being a complex being! We all have things we want to work on, to be happier, to better ourselves, to make more time for ourselves, to be a better friend and it may be today you think you have 10 things or 10 thousand things you wish you could do better, these things motivate us but if we are not careful can also get us down in the dumps! So this is where I must listen to what I’m about to write…

We are a work in progress and if you believe in yourself, people will believe in you, if you are constantly working on being an inspiration to yourself and others and most importantly smile and take time to listen to your body and others then you are good enough and it’s as simple as that!!!!
